Completion: 2023
Main Contractors : Morris and Spottiswood for UOG
Project Overview
in 2023, DM Roofing and Roughcasting collaborated with Morris and Spottiswood for the University of Glasgow to regenerate an existing sandstone property on the UOG campus in the West End of Glasgow.
Building Background
The project focused on a historic building within the University of Glasgow campus, known for its architectural significance.
Project Challenges
The works involved utilising SIGA 120 slates, quarried in the valleys of Wales, as replacements for the existing Ballachulish Scottish Slates. DM Roofing also designed and installed all lead work, new 18mm sarking boards, and traditional bespoke cast rainwater goods, both straight and radius. Additionally, the project provided an opportunity to showcase traditional roof details to a group of apprentices as part of our apprentice scheme.
Scope of Work
Roofing:
Installation of SIGA 120 slates, known for their quality and similarity to traditional Scottish Slates.
Timber Work:
Installation of new 18mm sarking boards to support the roofing structure.
Lead Work:
Comprehensive design and installation of lead elements.
Rainwater Systems:
Installation of traditional bespoke cast rainwater goods.
Outcome
The regeneration of the property has preserved its historical integrity while incorporating modern roofing techniques. The project also served as a valuable training ground for our apprentices, ensuring the continuation of traditional craftsmanship.
