Shettleston Parish Church

The internal and external refurbishment of Shettleston Parish Church posed a number of challenges as listed buildings of this age generally do. The first major element of this project; with the turrets in mind; was the logistics and planning of scaffolding and being able to ensure all works were done in a safe and efficient manner. As the project included stonework surrounding the turrets planning and executing the turrets were a key element of the project.

As the turrets are such a dominant feature of the roof, it was vital that we ensured these were done to a high standard. Upon inspection of the existing roof; it was noted that Aris tiles had been used to the hips. With cost and programme in mind we were instructed to replace these with mitred tiles and code 4 lead soakers.

Keeping the mitred joint straight over a 12m span was a challenge which our tradesmen carried out to an excellent standard. The lead roof at the bottom of the turrets is also a particularly satisfying element of this project. On both turrets these areas had suffered severely due to rot; which had become noticeable on the interior of the church.

From the outset we immediately faced an issue with levels due to the existing tile detail having no battens.

This meant the interaction between the new tiles and stone skew didn’t work in and so mock panels and level checks had to be done in order to ensure the roof was both aesthetically pleasing and fit for purpose.

We used redland rosemary brindle clay tiles on this roof. The technical team from Redland, worked very closely with us.
The project won both the NFRC Scotland and UK Roof Tiling Awards for 2018.
